‘Vampire Diaries’ Star Ian Teases Spicy Sage

Posted by with No Comments

Flashback fans, rejoice! When “The Vampire Diaries” returns Thursday night after an all-too-long hiatus, we’ll get a peek at what some of our favorite Mystic Falls immortals were doing a century ago, in the semi-”Downton Abbey”-inspired episode “1912.”

When Hollywood Crush caught up with star Ian Somerhalder over the weekend during PaleyFest, we just had to ask what to expect from the episode, which introduces us to the pivotal character Sage, played by “Smallville” actress Cassidy Freeman.

“Here’s the cool thing: As much as Stefan had Lexi, Damon had this woman Sage, and she was sort of this hot temptress, sultress, bad-ass chick,” Ian explained. “She revived him and showed him the way to live and enjoy yourself—realize life is short even for a vampire. Enjoy it. Literally, carpe diem—not to sound trite. I think that was a huge turning point for Damon, and no one’s seen it.”

…Until now, that is. And as it turns out, we’re not the only ones who sometimes enjoy eschewing the 21st century in favor of speakeasys and opulent balls.

“I think the invaluable thing about these flashbacks is that you inevitably find out what made these characters who they are now,” Ian continued. “What was the anatomy of the events that lead them up to now?”

Ian Works For eEnvironmental Change Through His Foundation

MNN: What inspired you to start ISF?
Ian Somerhalder: What didn’t inspire me to start ISF is more like it! I’ve always understood the interconnected nature of all living things. Growing up in rural Louisiana, I was fortunate to experience the magnificence of nature firsthand. I formed compelling and significant relationships with both the grandest demonstrations of life as well as the most precious and small.
While this continuously shaped my beliefs and my lifestyle, the real tipping point for me was the Gulf oil spill. Watching the small part of Earth I call home succumb to wide-scale, man-made devastation, inspired me to use my voice for immediate worldwide change. Before I knew it, my voice was joined by an echoing family of voices that were equally as passionate and emphatically determined to heal, protect and honor the planet and all its creatures. These empowered voices are the ISF family.
What are some of the greatest challenges the planet faces today?
Each of us could easily list a million challenges facing the planet, but at ISF we believe that one fundamental understanding has the ability to catalyze infinite possibilities. It’s the understanding that we are not separate from nature. Nature is an interdependent being that is expressed through us.

Ecorazzi Exclusive: We Chat With Ian

How long have you been involved in conservation and why?
Honestly, ever since I can remember, actually.

What’s your inspiration for the work you do?
I grew up on the Gulf Coast, and my father’s family were these French Cajun people from the bayou and my mother’s family were these half-Irish, half-Choctaw Indian farmers. So on all sides, it was about an agrarian lifestyle. The Gulf Coast is a pretty insanely delicate ecosystem, so my father made sure I understood it. You never littered, you always turned lights off.
